School Travel Plan
Kaunas has chosen to work with two schools in outer suburbs of the city - Vilijampole and Silainiu. The reason was that both schools with their areas are close to busy main roads, what is more thay are placed within high rise housing blocks.
The intention is to work with the school pupils to help them design a school travel plan that will identify the key areas of concern and danger and to work with the students to help create a set of innovate solutions to these problems. Overall the result should be a document with student ownership and school support and that provides students and the school Director with a clear set of steps to increase traffic safety, improve the school journey environment, improve public transport services to and from school and to encourage several other mobility choices for school travel.
Due to the fact that key representatives from here were interviewed as part of the Kaunas peer review exercise two schools were chosen. Also, we are working with students who are representatives of their school council, which we hope will make the stages of STP implementation more focused on political support not only form within the school but also from within the city municipality. Our aim would be to have a ‘STP’ that would be accepted by the Kaunas City Council as the basis for improvements to be made on a policy and budgetary level. We would also expect to use the political weight of the SUTP Working Group that has been set up to push any recommendations from these schools through the city council decision making process.
As a reward for the hard work that the students have put into making the STP happen, we would like to link the students to other schools in other countries that have already done this (schools in Lund and Goteborg have already been recommended as best practice examples).
